    В рамках церемонии открытия инсталляции Кары Уокер в виде монументального 13-метрового фонтана Hyundai Motor и Tate Modern объявили о начале пятого сезона программы Hyundai Commission. 

    Уокер, широко известная своими провокационными и откровенными работами, в которых исследуются проблемы расовых отношений, сексуальности и насилия в эпоху работорговли, создала для Hyundai Commission одну из самых амбициозных на сегодняшний день работ. «Fons Americanus» представляет историю зарождения африканской диаспоры в США и ставит актуальные вопросы о том, что рассказывают и о чем умалчивают традиционные памятники. В этом году пройдет уже пятая ежегодная экспозиция в рамках программы Hyundai Commission, которая включает серию работ, созданных знаменитыми мировыми художниками специально для Турбинного зала, в рамках уникального долгосрочного партнерства между галереей Tate и компанией Hyundai Motor.

    Инсталляция «Fons Americanus», расположенная в дальнем конце Турбинного зала, представляет собой скульптурный фонтан, возвышающийся над двумя овальными чашами. В этих чашах и по четырем сторонам многоуровневого центрального пьедестала располагаются разнообразные фигуры, вода стекает из самой верхней из них. Композиция напоминает Мемориал Виктории перед Букингемским дворцом, посвященный королеве, который был спроектирован в 1901 году и открыт в 1911 году. В отличие от памятника Британской империи едкая критическая работа Уокер переворачивает с ног на голову традиционную функцию мемориалов и ставит под сомнение представляемую ими идеологию власти. В этой композиции, где струи фонтана символизируют воды Атлантического океана, художник рассказывает о работорговле, амбициях, судьбах и трагедиях людей из Африки, Америки и Европы.

    Скульптуры, составляющие монумент, взяты из разных исторических, литературных и культурных источников. Среди них — «Невольничий корабль» Дж. М. В. Тёрнера (1840), «Гольфстрим» Уинслоу Хомера (1899) и «Физическая невозможность смерти в сознании живущего» Дэмиена Херста (1991).     Полное название работы выведено на стене Турбинного зала и представляет собой слова, сказанные Уокер. Она призывает посетителей критически взглянуть на историю, часто игнорируемую в Британии, и называет эту композицию «даром сердцу Империи, менявшей судьбы мира». Свою работу она подписала словами «Kara Walker, NTY» (Not Titled Yet, Пока без названия), с легкой издевкой над названиями официальных британских наград за заслуги по типу OBE (Order of the British Empire, Орден Британской Империи).

    Кара Уокер
